Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

I loved the book so much! Don’t waste time on the movie because I was highly disappointed in it. The book is much better and amazing and the action and emotion was nonstop.

I loved this book so much I had to read it within a week because I was trying to savor it. I found this book eye opening in many ways. Although it was through the perspective of a black family in which I’m familiar with, I saw it through another lens which made me see the world differently. If you’re thinking about the book I recommend you just get it because regardless, there is something that will stick with you from this book. Overall I enjoyed it and I think anyone who reads it will too.

Loved this book from beginning to end! I’m literally watching the credits roll on the movie as I type this and I must say: the book is definitely more detailed than the movie! Much more powerful detail. All in all, both still deliver the same compelling message. Easily a new favorite!

  • Amazing

I love this book because it gives the perspective of things that are usually seen on television from a different perspective. I read the entire book, it’s amazing, and I hope other people can become mature enough to understand how important this book is to our generation and youth. I love how the book puts black youth first, and gives their perspective, which is unusual these days. I would love to see a sequel about Khalil’s perspective.
